Art of the Stare

Nijitha was not sure of how well Liam’s strategy of picking up girls at the pub would work, for her, anyway.

Liam, self proclaimed ladies man and newly appointed mentor, his words, had taken it upon himself to guide her through recently-out-of-the-closet life like a campaign driven Instagram influencer coach. His methods were questionable to say the least.

“You just got to spark their curiosity” he said, spiling his drink a little “Women do not want to be impressed, they want to be intrigued”

She raised an eyebrow “That so?”

He nodded “Watch and learn, young padawan”

Liam looked around the bar and found a blonde near the dartboard “Target acquired” he whispered.

Then he just stared at her intermittently, in an not so creepy way, well, maybe a little, but there was focus and determination in his eyes, a calculate squint and a slight head tilt. She finally glanced his way, was startled a bit and narrowed her eyes back at him. There was a silent, confused exchange. Just as she raised her hand in a universal gesture of ‘What’, Liam nonchalantly looked away, like he had never noticed her.

A few minutes later, she walked over to us. Liam was still not paying any mind to her.

“Do I know you?” she asked, tapping his shoulder.

Liam turned around as if she had interrupted a dream “Wow! Does that actually work? Not so original but still applaud the effort”

She laughed “I thought you were staring at me”

“Tell me who isn’t staring at you here?” he shrugged.

That is all it took, few dumb jokes, complimenting her Pikachu tattoo and telling her she had cute eyes. “You definitely are a Pikachu, shockingly cute”

Nijitha watched them go arm in arm, still not sure if he even caught her name. She got a text from him an hour later

Pikachu does scream Pika Pika, did not even make it to her bedroom. On my way back.

He vanished like a thief in the night.

Nijitha shook her head, baffled and impressed. Maybe Liam’s advice would not work for her, but damn he was smooth.

There is no way I am tilting my head and squinting at random girls across the bar, she thought.

Well, at least, not yet.
