How to Romance a City

The ten dollar bill was lying lonely on the pavement, fluttering slightly in the morning breeze like it had somewhere important to be.

Jade bent down to grab it, feeling both lucky and a little guilty, as if he was stealing someone else’s treasure.

He looked around, expecting someone to shout “Hey, that is mine!”
But the streets, warm in the golden glow of a rising sun, was quiet.

This was Step One in learning how to romance a city:
Discovering a tiny treasure and letting it feel like fate.

From then on the day unfolded with little adventures.
His new fortune, bought him a coffee from a nearby cafe he never noticed before.
The coffee was named Tokyo, it had a hit of cherry blossom and vanilla.
The barista drew a heart in the foam without asking, she smiled warmly as she handed him the mug.
A violinist played La Folia on the corner, serenading the sidewalk to everyone passing by.
Jade lingered longer than necessary, letting the moment soak in.

Step Two:
Pause for the city’s music, it is always playing, in one form or another.

With caffeine in his veins and optimism in his heart, Jade wandered aimlessly.
The city became his playground.

An old bookstore beckoned him, it’s sign read “Ye Who Reads” swayed creakily in the wind.

Stepping inside he was greeted by the scent of aged paper and the sight of dust particles, floating like tiny planets in a galaxy of pages. Each shelf seemed to hum with secrets, inviting him to explore. Jade picked up an old, tattered book and flipped the pages to find a hand written note.

“To Dear Jaden,
For moments when you feel lost,
you are not, you are just discovering yourself, keep going.”

Each letter was penned with love. It felt personal, as if written by someone who knew him, who saw him.

“What were his odds of picking this book, flipping to this page?” Jade wondered.

Step Three:
Let the city write its love letter to you.

Wandering further from the palace of written words, he came up on an artist hurling paint against a brick wall.

From a distance, the splashes seemed chaotic, random strokes of colors but as Jade approached closer he was able to see a pattern emerge, the shimmering scales of a mermaid. Jade stood in disbelief

“Want to see it up close?” the artist called out, he pointed to a ladder leaning against the wall. “Climb up.”

Ever curious Jade ascended. From this vantage, the city stretched before him, glittering with lights that blinked like stars trapped in glass and concrete. The wind carried the scent of rain and a promise of tomorrow. Jade breathed deeply.

Step Four:
Look up every once in a while, breathe in the skyline.

He decided to take the long way home, walking through a small community garden filled with wildflowers and tiny lights strung between poles. A couple were slowly swaying to a tune only they could hear. Jade smiled, feeling like he had wandered into a dream.

Step Five:
Seek out the unexpected, the city always has secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Passing a food truck, he ordered tacos that tasted like someone’s grandmother had poured her soul into them. The vendor chatted with him, about the city’s history, about how the old brick road used to lead to the docks, how that park had been an orchard decades ago.

Step Six:
Taste the flavors of the city, the spices of its stories.

As the night deepened, Jade caught his reflection in a shop window, lit by neon signs.
He looked different, lighter, like he had stepped out of himself for a while.

Finally, he made it home and looked out the window, he realized the city was not just a backdrop to his day, it was a character, alive and full of wonder.

Step Seven:
Leave space for tomorrow.
Cities and life, are best explored one day at a time.
